Building a sustainable future through responsible consumption and production across eight Hong Kong universities.
A collaborative initiative promoting responsible consumption across Hong Kong campuses
The Sustainable Campus Consumer Programme (SCCP) is a groundbreaking three-year initiative launched in January 2022 by the Hong Kong Sustainable Campus Consortium (HKSCC). The programme represents a collaborative effort by eight UGC-funded universities to promote the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
Since 2010, Hong Kong's eight leading universities have worked together through the HKSCC to create a more sustainable society. The SCCP builds on this foundation, aiming to groom a new generation of responsible and thoughtful consumers who understand the environmental and social impacts of their daily choices.
The programme concluded in May 2025, having successfully engaged thousands of students across all eight university campuses through innovative initiatives, educational campaigns, and behaviour-change interventions.

Implementing practical solutions to reduce waste and promote sustainable resource use on campus through smart meters and reusable systems.
Inspiring students to become sustainability leaders and advocates through peer campaigns and leadership programmes.

Measurable outcomes driving sustainable change
The SCCP directly supports Hong Kong's pledge to achieve carbon neutrality before 2050. The programme aligns with the Hong Kong Climate Action Plan 2050, promoting net-zero electricity, energy savings, green transport, and waste reduction.
The success of SCCP demonstrates the power of university collaboration. This partnership model creates a multiplier effect, generating greater collective outcomes than individual efforts could achieve.
By cultivating green habits among young people, the programme creates a powerful ripple effect extending beyond university campuses. Students carry sustainable practices into their families, communities, and future workplaces.
The programme packages its deliverables with guides and implementation recommendations, creating an accelerator effect across Hong Kong. These resources enable other organisations to replicate successful initiatives.
While the programme concluded in May 2025, the knowledge, momentum, and infrastructure developed will continue to drive progress towards responsible consumption and production.
