Smart Electricity Meter
Why Conserve Electricity?
Conserving electricity is crucial due to its substantial contribution to carbon emissions. Electricity generation alone accounts for about 66% of total carbon emissions in Hong Kong. By reducing electricity consumption, we can directly mitigate the environmental impact of our energy usage, helping to combat climate change and reduce our carbon footprint. Conservation efforts are essential in promoting sustainability, transitioning towards a greener and more environmentally friendly energy landscape and benefit our next generation.
What is Smart Electricity Meter?
Real time electricity data will be measured by smart electricity meters and be accessible to the university community through the Internet of Things (IoT) data platform. The transparency of the data aims to educate the community to be conscious of their electricity consumption. Educational campaigns will be built around the data to drive behavioural change.

Tips on Responsible Electricity Consumption
Light
- Avoid frequently turning the light on and off to conserve electricity effectively and reduce costs
- Use LED bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs to save more energy
- Use natural light during day time
Air conditioners
- Choose air conditioners with grade 1 energy efficiency rating. Grade 1 rated AC saves up to 40% energy per year compared to Grade 3 rated AC
- Use a circulation fan under the air conditioner to enhance cooling
- Set the temperature of the AC to 25.5 degree celsius
Washing Machine
- Choose washing machine with grade 1 energy efficiency rating
- Operate the washing machine when it is 80% full
- Use cold water for washing to save energy and protect fabrics
- Use a drying rack instead of washing dryer to save energy and reduce wear and tear
Computer
- Turn off the monitor instead of using a screensaver
- Use sleep mode for your computer when idle
- Completely shut down the computer when not in use
Others
- Switch to cold air mode when hair drying
- Use induction cooktop instead of electric cooktop or gas cooktop since the heat transfer of induction cooktop is the most efficient
- Use the stairs as much as possible instead of lift or escalator
- Unfreeze the food completely before cooking it
- Do not stock the refrigerator to full capacity to ensure air circulation and set the temperature to moderate
